For parents and carers
What is Whyzy Town?
Whyzy Town is a YouTube channel of short, original songs and stories for curious little children. Volta is a little inventor who always asks “Why?” and then says “Let’s try!”. Wattsy, a friendly flying robot, explains things in one simple sentence, and sometimes gets them a bit wrong (“Oops, my wires got wiggly!”), which shows kids that mistakes are part of learning. Dot, a tiny robot ladybug, glows when an idea clicks, and Mango, a golden puppy, celebrates every try with a wiggle. Each episode answers one simple “why?” question and ends with something to try with a grown-up.
Whyzy Town is made by Sam, an electrician in Sydney, Australia, who wanted friendly, accurate answers to the questions kids ask every day.
Who is it for?
- Children aged about 2 to 6, ideally watching and playing with a grown-up.
- Episodes are short, with slow pacing, lots of repetition and pauses for children to join in.
- Every video is set to Made for Kids on YouTube. That means YouTube turns off comments and personalised ads on our videos and limits the data it collects, in line with the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and YouTube’s own policies.
About this website
- Kids’ Town map: children tap a place in Whyzy Town to visit a free learning zone. Each zone has picture cards that speak one simple fact when tapped, and a shelf of our episodes on that topic.
- Voices: until our recorded character voices are ready, the picture cards use your device’s built-in speech voice (on your device only). We never use the microphone or camera.
- Videos: nothing from YouTube loads until someone taps play. Videos then play from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced (youtube-nocookie.com) player. We never reward children for watching or subscribing.
- No accounts, ads, cookies or tracking. Sound and motion settings are saved only in your browser. See our Privacy Policy.
- Parent gate: the grown-ups area opens after a press-and-hold plus a simple sum. It is there to stop little fingers wandering into grown-up pages and links. It is not a way of giving consent, and nothing behind it collects information about your child.
How the videos are made
Every episode starts with a person: Sam chooses the topic, checks the facts, and shapes the script and song. We want you to know exactly how the rest is made:
Honest disclosure about AI tools: we may use AI tools to help create some parts of our videos and this website, such as animation, character images, music and voices. Our characters, songs and stories are our own originals, and we do not copy other shows. A real person reviews every episode before it is published to check that it is accurate, gentle and suitable for young children. Where YouTube’s rules require it, we label altered or synthetic content.
Some things we always do:
- Keep the science simple and correct.
- Avoid scary images, fast flashing, sudden loud sounds and real children’s faces.
- Never pretend that AI or robots are alive or have feelings.
- Remind kids to “ask a grown-up” about tools, plugs, screens and the internet.
- Never ask children for their name, photos or any other personal details.
Screen-time tips
Short, shared videos and games can be a lovely way to spark curiosity. A few ideas that may help:
- Watch and play together when you can. Sing the chorus, do the actions and answer Volta’s “Why?” questions out loud.
- Keep it short. Australia’s physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for the early years suggest no screen time for children under 2, and no more than 1 hour a day for children aged 2 to 5 (less is better).
- Take it off the screen. After an episode, try the idea in real life: count steps, sort blocks by size, or look for tiny things with a magnifying glass.
- Turn off autoplay in the YouTube or YouTube Kids app so one video doesn’t roll into the next, and consider using YouTube Kids or supervised accounts and parental controls.
- Screens off before bed and during meals helps with sleep and family time.
Safety: Volta loves inventing, but real tools and electricity can be dangerous. Please remind children that only grown-ups use tools and plug things in, and keep cords and power points out of reach.
